The most recent information on marijuana allergies showed up in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, in 2015. In this journal, a study conducted by Dr. Thad Ocampo showed, most notably, that the luminal binding protein RuBisCo and specific parts of the ATP synthase in cannabis was responsible for marijuana allergies. Like hay fever and other allergies, exposure to certain proteins (in this case, in cannabis), can trigger abnormal immune responses in some people.

Cannabis Allergy Symptoms

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology published a study in 2012 that identified cannabis as an allergen. In the noted case study, 17 patients received skin-prick tests that used a cannabis extract. All patients developed adverse reactions, including hives and rashes. Of the patients, 15% experienced wheezing and a runny nose. These are common symptoms with people who have cannabis allergies. In severe cases, anaphylactic shock and even death can occur.

Marijuana allergies are similar to pollen allergies, and when a person is allergic to one, there is a good chance of allergy to the other. A cannabis allergy can also act like a food allergy. Dealing with these types of allergies can be difficult, but the good news is that they can be treated and eliminated through desensitization techniques, often in the form of inoculations.
